TAX TAKES

Welcome to my corner of the internet. My name is Jared, and I’m a partner with White and Williams LLP.

I get asked a couple of times every week, “What do you do, exactly?” It’s a fair question. I cover a lot of ground as a tax attorney, and my experience lends me to be used in a variety of ways for a client. In a nutshell, I come in at the strategy and planning, implementation, or cleanup stages of any given tax or finance issue to walk a client through the issues, solutions, damage control, and resolution. Most importantly, I want you to understand what’s happening, what your options are, and that the world will not end.

I’ve broken my practice area into four groups below, each of which are constantly evolving. In order to keep up, I’ve created links for each area to find important, but simplified updates. If you want more detail, I would be happy to talk. For now, consider these quick “heads-up” notices on developments that may be of interest.

A family office can be big or small. With each unique family company come equally unique challenges and solutions, ranging from asset protection to multigenerational succession, from governance to wealth and tax planning.

The ability to draw income from and hold assets in another state or country has never been more accessible. With that accessibility comes a greater need for tax-efficient operations, structures, asset protection and financing.

The rules facing companies with respect to ERISA, employee benefits, and executive compensation are complex and important. It can be easy to become lost in the alphabet soup of federal agencies and regulations.

A key part of legacy planning is working with tax-exempt organizations. Due to their special legal status and tax attributes, both the type of charitable vehicle and the donated assets are often subject to complex and rigorous tax requirements.

“The difference between death and taxes is death doesn’t get worse every time Congress meets.”

-Will Rogers

“Your decisions from today forward will affect not only your life, but also your entire legacy.”

-Dave Ramsey
